Over the past few weeks I have received a lot of questions about blogging. Should I start a blog? Where do I begin? What do I write about? Is it worth the time? I am by no means an expert, but I do have a few tips to share with you. Keep reading for a few lessons I've learned in my experience as a blogger.
1. Just do it.
I know what is going through your head. You are scared to put yourself out there because blogging requires a LOT of vulnerability, and what if people think you are silly for trying? I frequently have the exact same thoughts, and I totally understand that it is hard to be open about your life on the internet. My best advice to you, if you are doubting whether or not you should start a blog, is to just do it. Don't hesitate. Don't worry about what other people will think. Don't doubt yourself. Just go for it, and be confident. By believing these lies, you are only hindering yourself.
2. You WILL have to work at it.
Blogging can be an incredible outlet when you are stressed, but it can also be a major source of stress too. When I started my blog I had no idea how much work it would be to build the site, to maintain my posts, to think of post ideas, to take photos for each post, and to promote my site. So, if you want to start a blog, remember that you will need to set aside time each week to work on it. Try setting aside a specific amount of time every single week to write content, plan, and promote your blog. For example, if you have 3 extra hours each week that you want to work on your blog, set aside 1 hour to write content, 1 hour to plan posts, and 1 hour to promote your site.
3. Define your purpose & audience first.
This is one of the biggest mistakes that I made when I started my blog. I did not define my purpose and I did not know who I wanted my audience to be. The issue with this is that if you don't know why you are writing your posts, or to who you are writing your posts, you will not know who to share your blog with. This makes promotion very difficult, and you will lose your focus easily. I heard a quote recently that said, "Focusing is about learning to say no, and successful people are those that say no to almost everything." If you want to start a blog, answer the follow questions on a sheet of paper:
1. Who do I want to write for?
2. What topics do I want to focus on?
3. When/How often do I want to post?
4. Why am I doing this?
Keep this sheet of paper in a safe spot, and look back at it when you lose your focus. I guarantee you will appreciate having a reference point when you start to question yourself down the road.
4. Write a minimum of 5 articles before you launch.
I must admit, this tip is one that I struggle to follow myself. Consistency is often my downfall. You do not need to write a ton of content to be successful, but you do need to be consistent with the content you do write. Instead of writing 5 posts every week, try writing 1-2 a week. In addition to this, try having a bank of posts lined up so that you are not stressing about writing your posts each week. Try to write 5-10 posts before you launch your blog, and regularly add to that bank of posts. If you post 1 post a week and have a bank of 5 stored up, you are already 5 weeks ahead of the game.
5. Don't let social media define your success.
One of the greatest struggles I have with blogging, is that social media fosters an environment of comparison. As you write posts and take photos to promote your blog, you will find yourself comparing your blog, Instagram, and Facebook page to the work of others. The truth is, there will always always always be someone who is more successful than you are if you define your success according to social media. My photos will probably NEVER be as good as The New Darlings or India Earl, but thats not the point. Just keep working at it, and improve upon the location YOU are at. Not where you see others ahead of you.
I hope that these tips are helpful to you. I want to encourage you to keep pursuing these new ideas you have. Blogging is what you make of it, and I'm sure you have great ideas and content to offer.
